Kiki Thompson BA (Hons), PGCE
Art Teacher
Born in Geneva and raised in New York, Kiki comes from a long line of artists, including her grandparents and John Singer Sargent. It wasn’t until her required art course at Phillips Academy (Andover) that she became truly passionate about art. To this day, she uses elements from that course to inspire her students at VIS. After University, where she earned a B.A. (Hons.) in Art and French, she moved to Verbier to pursue her love of the mountains. She became a professional snowboarder on the World Cup Tour in Slalom, Giant Slalom, Boardercross and Freeride, winning the Australian Championships and becoming 24th in the world in Boardercross. Spending many years following winter between hemispheres, she received her Level II Snowboard Instructor qualification from the Australian Professional Snowsports Instructors and taught snowboarding in Australia for 4 winters. The year after retiring from competing on the tour, Kiki was commissioned to install a bronze sculpture of a cow in the Châble roundabout. Kiki continues to work as an artist developing design ideas for upcycled material into lights, as well as completing commissions for sculptures and paintings. She has public works around the world and is part of the Canton du Valais Art Collection. She co-founded and directs the Verbier 3-D Sculpture Park and Artists Residency, where artists are invited each year to create a new work for the sculpture park located between Ruinettes and La Chaux. Each artist is asked to teach a 2-period class to the local school and to VIS based on his or her artist’s practice, which opens the eyes of the children to the world of Contemporary Art.
In her spare time, she loves to cook, play tennis, ski, ski tour, snowboard and go to design, art and architecture exhibitions.
