The Secondary School Expedition to Fiesch
The VIS Secondary School travelled to Fiesch for a week of ski touring, free ride and cross-country skiing in the beautiful Aletsch Arena.
Storm
We arrived on Monday and checked into the outstandingly well resourced and comfortable Fiesch Sport Resort. Gathering all our warmest clothes we headed up the telecabine to face a howling storm that meant we were only able to have lunch at Fiescheralp and then enjoy the sensation of icy wind blown snow in our faces on the two open drag lifts.
Blue Skies
However, the weather cleared up spectacularly for the next four days so we were able to benefit from fresh powder and beautiful blue skies for the rest of the week. The guides were amazing which meant that all our students enjoyed some high quality ski touring. It also meant that the cross-country ski pistes in the Goms area were in top notch condition.
Entertainments
There was a range of activities in the evenings. Students could swim every night, play dodgeball or basketball in the sports halls. Ms Martin challenged the school with some amusing command tasks which culminated in creating an haut couture outfit made of everyday items such as feathers and bin bags. There were some very talented designers.
Learning
This was a great opportunity for students to try new sports such as cross country skiing as well as learn self-reliance by staying away from home and having to keep their bedrooms clean and tidy. Some did better than others!
We returned home on the Friday after a last day of piste skiing around Fiesch. The coach was quiet on the way home…always a good sign!
