WHAT’S A FOREST SCHOOL?

Forest school is nature-based outdoor learning which targets the holistic development of young children. There’s a wide variety of activities that children in forest school can engage in. They include :

  • Building of shelter
  • Taking sensory walks
  • Foraging
  • Climbing trees
  • Cooking by the campfire
  • Nature art
  • Woodwork
  • Playing endless exciting games
  • Mud and puddle jumping

IMPORTANCE OF FOREST SCHOOL

Forest school plays a major role in developing various skills that can’t be nurtured within the confines of a classroom. Forest school-based activities are physical and this is essential for keeping children active. Children are exposed to different activities which develop their gross motor and fine skills.

While in the forest school, your child will learn how to take risks, appreciate nature, exercise their analytical skills, and master the art of making informed decisions. The children learn how to be self-sufficient and this enhances their self-esteem. Forest school exposes children to trial and error-related activities and this comes in handy to instill in them resilience and persistence, skills which are essential in both in the classroom and outdoors.

Forest school is related to the education curriculum in many ways. For instance, when children spend time outdoors, they learn about different seasons and the weather which is critical for life skills. Learning about plants and animals are also linked to science-related subjects just the same way woodwork activities and building is linked to design and technology. Being outdoors is beneficial for children as it helps them connect with the world and understand nature.

FOREST SCHOOL GEAR FOR YOUR CHILDREN

If your children are attending forest school, they will need :

  • Woollen hat and sensible gloves
  • Waterproof, sturdy outdoor shoes
  • Warm, waterproof rain jacket
  • Waterproof trousers
  • Warm socks. Children are advised to bring a spare pair
  • Thermal underwear and balaclavas if extreme weather
