Freeride Programme

Freeride: Years 5-13

During the winter months, the mountains become an extension of the VIS classroom. In place of regular PE lessons during the week, students take to the slopes and follow a programme suited to their ability and ambitions.

Verbier is well known for its freeride terrain, making it an ideal place for experienced skiers and snowboarders to develop their skills beyond the piste. The VIS Freeride Programme is designed for strong riders who are ready to take on more challenging and varied mountain terrain.

Working in small groups with experienced coaches, students explore Verbier and the 4 Vallées while developing their skills in powder, variable snow, tree skiing, steep terrain and natural features. Freestyle training also gives riders the opportunity to work on jumps, drops and other features.

Technical ability is only one part of becoming a good freerider. Mountain awareness, safety and responsible decision-making are central to the programme. Students take part in avalanche and mountain-safety training, helping them better understand the environment they are riding in and the decisions involved in moving safely through the mountains.

Teamwork is also an important part of the programme. Students train together throughout the winter, supporting and challenging one another during regular sessions, team away days and opportunities to take part in freeride competitions. Dedicated ski-fitness training complements their time on snow and helps build the strength and conditioning needed for freeride.

With some of the world’s best freeride terrain on our doorstep, the programme gives students the chance to challenge themselves, become more confident in varied terrain and develop as responsible and capable mountain athletes.
